Video Compressor

Free online video compressor for MP4, MOV, WebM, and MKV. Small files compress in your browser, bigger ones on our server with deletion within an hour. No login, no watermark.

What this tool does

This online video compressor reduces the file size of MP4, MOV, WebM, and MKV videos up to 500 MB, free and without an account. Files up to 100 MB are processed entirely in your browser and are never uploaded. Larger files run on our private server and are deleted within an hour.

Compression always involves a trade-off between file size and quality. This page puts that trade-off under your control: the slider shows the estimated output size before you start, and the settings define how much detail the file is allowed to lose.

How it works

  1. Add a video (MP4, MOV, WebM, or MKV, up to 500 MB).
  2. Leave the mode on Auto, or choose on-device or cloud processing and set the compression level. The estimated output size updates as you adjust the slider.
  3. Download the result. Cloud copies are deleted within an hour; locally processed files never leave your device.

When to use it

  • Meet Discord's upload limit

Discord caps uploads on the free plan. Set a target file size, check the estimate, and get under the limit on the first attempt.

  • Send videos by email

Most email providers limit attachments to roughly 20 to 25 MB. A compressed file fits without resorting to external file-sharing links.

  • Speed up uploads

A smaller file reaches YouTube, Instagram, or any other platform faster.

  • Reclaim storage space

Long recordings consume significant storage. Keep an archive-quality copy and remove the original once you are satisfied with the result.

How this compressor works

Video compression works by decoding a file and re-encoding it at a lower bitrate. That is how a 500 MB video shrinks to a fraction of its size. It is a re-encode, not a lossless edit: gentler settings preserve more detail, aggressive settings trade detail for size. The compression slider exists so that you decide where that balance sits.

What we do differently is routing. Files up to 100 MB are compressed by your browser itself, which means there is no upload step at all. Larger files are handled on our server over an encrypted connection, and the input and the result are both deleted within an hour. The privacy notice above the workspace reflects the route your file actually takes.

The tool is free, funded by ads, with no account and no watermark. Everything runs in a standard browser and there is nothing to install.

Frequently asked questions

How does it process my video without uploading it?

Your browser ships with a built-in video engine (WebCodecs). For files up to 100 MB, this page uses it to decode and re-encode your video locally. Think of it as downloaded software that exists entirely inside the tab: kill the session and the tool vanishes, and your file never went past the browser.

Why is compression slow sometimes?

Local speed depends on your settings and your device's performance. Cloud jobs queue behind other users during busy hours. While we work on adding more cloud capacity, the Additional Settings give you speed-versus-quality dials you can adjust.

Is the quality loss visible?

At gentle settings, no. At aggressive ones, yes, usually as softness in fine detail such as text or fast motion. A practical approach: try 50% first, check the result, go harder only if it still looks right.

What formats work?

MP4, MOV, WebM, and MKV in. Output is MP4, because MP4 plays everywhere. If you need a different format, the Video Converter can convert the compressed file to whatever you want.

Compress for Discord: what size?

Free Discord accounts cap uploads at 10 MB (at the time of writing). Slide the compression lever until the estimate reads under 10 MB, or pick a smaller resolution for long clips. The bitrate calculator can tell you the quality you get at that size.
