When the codec already fits the target format, the file is switched by lossless pass-through and every pixel is kept. Everything else is re-encoded with settings you control.

Pass-through first, re-encode when needed
When the video codec already matches the target format, the converter switches the container without touching the streams. That path is fast and lossless. When a real conversion is required, the re-encode uses your chosen codec and quality settings instead of a fixed preset.
Routing works the same way as across the rest of the site: small files convert in the browser, larger ones on the private server with deletion within an hour. The route note tells you which path a file will take before you press convert.

Frequently asked questions
How does it decide between pass-through and re-encoding?
It compares the video and audio codecs inside your file with what the target format allows. If they fit, the container is rewritten and the streams are copied bit for bit. If not, the file is re-encoded with your settings.
Will converting reduce quality?
Pass-through conversions keep the original quality exactly. Re-encodes apply the codec and quality settings you choose: high quality settings are visually transparent for most content, low settings are not.
Can I extract audio from a video?
Yes. Choose an audio target such as MP3, WAV, or FLAC and the converter keeps only the audio track. For MP3 specifically, the MP4 to MP3 Converter does the same job with audio-focused settings.
Can I trim or crop before converting?
Yes. Start and end times, resolution, cropping, rotation, and volume can all be set before the conversion runs.
